Google Launches AI Mode for Search, Challenging Perplexity and ChatGPT

Did Google feel the pressure coming from Perplexity and ChatGPT? Maybe, maybe not, but the new Google AI Mode can make your online searches much better.

Using generative AI to make search more efficient, Google is looking to take over some of the AI space from ChatGPT and Perplexity. It’s no secret that ChatGPT has become one of the most popular online tools since it was launched. This put the pressure on Google to create an AI presence and the new AI Mode could be exactly what’s needed to keep things interesting and competitive.

AI Mode is an alternative

This new mode on Google is an alternative to the traditional search interface. Instead of functioning like the traditional Google search page, This new mode functions like a chatbot. Users can ask questions and the chatbot will use Google to search the web for information, delivering quick answers with cited sources and links. This can make research much easier and provide users with the desired information much faster than utilizing traditional Google search functions.

Finding products

Sometimes, when you search for products your search terms bring you the wrong items and information. This simply means you’ve got to try a different search term, but Google AI Model is expected to bring more anticipation to your needs to help you find the right products for your needs. This mode will also help you understand the differences between similar products, which can make it much easier to find the right item when you want it. Additionally, this model will integrate the company’s information systems bringing stock market, weather, and shopping data to users.

Not Google’s first AI

Expanding its AI into search tools has been a goal and desire for Google for a while. The company received feedback from many users who desire AI responses or more of their searches. This led to AI-augmented search with AI overviews, which allowed users to receive an AI-generated answer to a Google search, which is posted at the top of the search results. This new tool debuted in May of last year and received mixed reactions at first, but Google claims it’s one of the company’s most popular services, with more than one billion global users.

A more conversational approach

Google AI Model signals a change to search and how it can function in the future with a more conversational approach to online searches. This new tool will bring only the best content to your results and provide more information than the traditional Google search page. This is a direct shot at ChatGPT and Perplexity, but that shouldn’t surprise anyone. This new feature should help users find the desired information much more easily than before.

Is this new AI search tool any good?

Most of us have heard of some strange and unusual results coming from other AI programs when requesting specific information. One results that has famously made its way around the internet is a result that told a user to add glue to a pizza recipe to get the cheese and sauce to stick to the dough better. That’s probably not a helpful result.

Some users have reported impressive results when testing this new search tool. The AI Mode is answering questions, with appropriate results, and even adds tips and training information where appropriate. That seems much more useful than being told to add glue to your pizza recipe.

More complex searches answered

The traditional Google search page is somewhat limited. Sure, it stores your most common searches to make it easy to search again and handles specific terms for search results, but more complex searches can be beyond this tool. Many people are asking questions that are about twice the length of traditional searches. This means many people aren’t as focused on keywords as they once were but now ask full, in-depth questions in which they want answers to every part of the question. These in-depth search queries make Google AI Mode extremely important for many users to ensure they receive the most comprehensive information available.

Prioritizing factual information

This new Google tool prioritizes factual information and presents results that can be verified, which can be extremely important. This means you could receive trustworthy responses to your health and wellness questions or investment information. It’s still a good idea to go back and verify the information from Google AI Mode, but initial testing and results show this tool might be much better at providing you with trustworthy and useful search results than ChatGPT and Perplexity.
